Challenging Address

Sent by Bray to A Resident of Hallingbury where land used to be held by handing over yearly to the King's exchequer a packet of postcards and a Silver Needle on 17th November 1898.

After the Norman Conquest, Hallingbury became a royal demesne (a piece of land attached to a manor and retained by the owner for their own use), the tenant holding it by the Sergeanty of Falconry in the 12th century and, in the 13th, by paying into the King’s Exchequer one silver needle on the morrow of St. Michael.

The Post Office deemed that by returning the card to Bray it had been "freshly addressed" and imposed a charge of 1d. to cover the lack of a second postage stamp. On this occassion Bray's method of exploiting the regulation pertaining to free redirection failed him.
