Sent to fictitious address
Envelope sent by Bray to Mr W R Bray, Imam Muscat House, Zanzibar, East Africa on 9th July 1899.
Not only was this sent to a fictitious address but Bray also used a Zanzibar stamp to pay for the postage from England. The stamp is cancelled by a Catford squared cirle postmark.
Despite this double piece of mischief, the envelope travelled all the way to Zanzibar and back acquiring a Zanzibar postmark and a 1 anna postage due mark (which resulted in a 1d. charge).
Not surprisingly the envelope also bears a manuscript "Unclaimed" mark.
