Autograph request

Sent by Bray to Major + (Cigarette card featuring Frederick Burnham) + West Cliff Gardens, Bournemouth on 15th December 1900 requesting his autograph.

Postcard with a cigarette card attached with the name portion removed leaving the postal authorities the challenge of identifying the intended recipient.

Upon arrival in Bournemouth the card was redirected to St. John's Wood, London where, presumably, Burnham was residing as evidenced by his autograph. The Post Office deemed this method of addressing mail was contrary to regulations and imposed a 1d. charge.

Frederick Russel Burnham DSO (1861-1947) was an American scout and world-traveling adventurer. He is known for his service to the British South Africa Company and to the British Army in colonial Africa, he befriended Robert Baden-Powell, teaching him outdoor skills and inspiring what would later become known as Scouting.
